THE PUBLIC PHOTOGRAPH

Assignment Three: Internet

The Internet is a public space where photographic images of all sorts figure prominently–from journalistic uses, stock sites, photo sharing sites such as flickr and photobucket, and more. Since the early days of the internet, artists have used it as a venue for producing artworks, often described as "net.art."

For this assignment, you are to make a photographically-based work that uses the Internet as its public site for viewing.

The following will not fulfill the assignment:

  • a personal web site
  • a portfolio site of your work
  • an online gallery of your work
  • a web site promoting a business (your own, someone else's, or fictional)

Rather, your challenge is to consider how, as an artist, you can make a work that uses the logic of the internet as its site; that is, a work that would not make sense anywhere else but the internet.

Due date: March 3. On this date, you must have already installed your piece. For critique, you must show documentation of the work. I.e., if it has been installed publicly, we will view photos or video of it. You may also plan to bring the group to see the work if it is in public and close to campus.
